Fifteen days in and I'm making an entire schedule overhaul...
1.) We'll be having a PM Meeting instead of a Morning Meeting.
2.) Daily Five will be moving BACK to the morning even though it will be interrupted by a 15-minute recess, three times a week.
3.) Math will be after lunch and calendar will be first thing in the morning.
4.) The pic shows my typical "Wednesday" schedule where we have "Enrichment". This is a time where we have grade-level meetings and the kids go to the gym. The other days, we have our specials from 2:00-2:35. Anyhow, the new schedule will give me "overflow" time if I need more time for math after lunch... and if I don't need the extra time, I'll have 40-minutes a day for science or social studies... did you hear that? The one thing that gets shoved to the side to make way for "more important" things time after time will have a *potential* 40-minutes a day! That means I'll probably get like 25-minutes a day to actually teach some science/ss on a consistent basis! Whoot whoot!
I am excited about the schedule changes... we tried it out today and it went so smoothly! The cards off to the side de-note things we may do if there is time. Ha ha. I just went on and on about science and, yes, that card is off to the side. But only because it's Wednesday's schedule and we have that "Enrichment" time, which is 50-minutes.
I've done reading after lunch for the past two years and have been really wanting it back in the morning. I think having the recess interruption will be OK- especially in the framework of Daily Five.
What are some of your favorite scheduling times for different subjects? Do you have a picture of your schedule to share? That's ok! Link up anyway and share about your day!

I just did a schedule overhaul myself - and told the kids they need to be "flexible" as it could change again until I get the recipe just right!
ReplyDeleteHere's mine (because I don't have a blog and can't join in on the linky party):
Arrival/Morning Jobs
Word Study/Word Wall/Handwriting (varies daily)
Reader's Workshop
Morning Meeting (thinking about doing in PM)
Recess (10:45)
Lunch (11:15)
Writer's Workshop (have never done in PM - I'm liking)
Snack/Wise Choice (Instead of in the morning since our morning is SO short and our PM is SO long)
Math/Workplaces
Special (always 1:50-2:30)
Science/Social Studies
(Fridays run much differently)
I have those same schedule cards. I bought them last year and love them. My only wish is that it had some of the same language we use at our school such as ELD or Word Study.
ReplyDeleteI can't wait to link up . I will take a picture tomorrow and post!

Morning work
ReplyDeleteSpecials
Writing (MWF) Making Meaning (T,TH)
Guided Reading Block
1. Shared Reading/CAFE mini-lesson
2. Daily 5/Reading Groups
Science/Social Studies ( I do one unit of one and then switch)
Lunch/Recess
Math
Flex Time (Building wide time from 2:20 to 2:50 we have flex. We use it for assemblies or on normal days I get to use it for extra reading groups or a low math group, etc.)
**What I love most about my schedule is I have from 9:30-11:40 for writing/reading. If I need to spend less time on writing and more time on reading than I can. I can also cut into science or social studies time. If I do end reading at 11:40, I have 40 minutes for science or social studies. Then lunch is over at 1 and I have from 1-2:20 for math. Often I use my flex time for low math groups, so I get even longer!
One thing that the 4th and 5th grade teachers at my school have been doing is a block schedule where one teacher teaches all the math, one teaches all the reading, etc. They seem to like that.
