Homework Club, Oh Homework Club! {Win One Today!}

I'm linking up with The Applicious Teacher to share my Homework Club!

**Today (7/7- happy birthday to my dad!!!) I'm adding a few more goodies to my Homework Club pack, bringing the total pages to over 70!**

Last week Tara posted her cute Homework Club display for her Monday Made-It post and it got me re-thinking about my homework club in my classroom.

Homework is tricky because, when students are young, if it doesn't get completed, it is a home issue not a student issue.  However, I also believe that we have to teach our students to succeed in spite of things they may be facing at home and an easy way we can do that is to encourage responsibility when it comes to homework.  One way I've found to do that is with a club... because kids love clubs!

Do you do a "Homework Club"?  I've been doing one since 2006 and it's a huge hit every year.  Basically, students can join the club each month just by completing their homework!  My kiddos don't know this (so don't tell them!) but they can secretly miss one assignment here and there and I don't make a fuss about it.  I know my teacher bag sits full and lonely many a night when I just can't get to the "homework" I brought for myself to do, so I try to be understanding for my students.  BUT, I do hold them accountable and try to develop that responsibility and pride in a job well done.

I just jazzed up all of my "Homework Club" resources and have them at TpT.

Each month, my students who stay in the club get to eat their lunch in the room with me and they each get an award...

And a homework pass they can cash in during a homework crisis...

I also display their names in my classroom for the month.  I think I'm going to put them in the hallway this coming year so everyone can share in our celebration!

I jazzed up my display a bit too...

I also have "Homework Club" brag tags from Image Stuff.  Not every kid gets one every month, but I choose two or three at random each month to receive one!  They love it!

I also use my monthly check lists (love 'em!) to keep my own private daily record of my students' homework completion.  Click HERE to check them out!

I just posted the whole jazzed up version of my Homework Club pack on TpT and I'm pretty proud of it!  You can check it out by clicking the pic below.  If you'd like to win a copy, leave me a homework related comment and I'll choose a winner late Sunday!
Check out my Homework Club on TpT!

  1. This resource looks wonderful! I have my students fill out a missing homework slip when they don't bring in an assignment. They are required to get it signed and return it to school the next day. Since I have been using the slips, I have less missing homework. I would love to have a positive reinforcement to bring in homework.

I agree with you, sometimes I let one or two assignments slip through without a lot fuss.

  2. I totally agree with you that with the little ones incomplete homework is a family thing not just a kid thing. But I love the idea of a "club", because you are so right about kids and clubs. I send home a Homework Folder on Monday that contains about 3 worksheets/activities and students have all week to complete it. Most kids do, but it seems like the ones who need the review the most aren't consistent about completing it. The "club" would definitely give them an incentive! Thanks for the chance to win!

  3. I have tried so many different ways to reinforce students to complete and turn in homework, from sending home all the work in a folder for the week, a ticket drawing for completed work, notes/calls home about missing work, etc. I have parents that don't want homework and parents that want a lot of homework! I like your idea and Tara's with the club, this might work as students love to eat in the room with the teacher!

  5. I too send a packet home on Mondays with the Thursday math packet to follow. When T-ball season arrives, I notice a drop off in homework completion. I love the idea for a Homework Club! I think I'll try that this year.

  9. I seriously love this. I struggle with managing homework in my 5th grade classroom... nothing seems to work. There are the kids that just don't bother with homework, ever. There are the kids that always do their work, too, and I feel like they don't get rewarded. I love your solution! Totally added it to my TpT wishlist. :)

  10. I love this whole idea. My school does HEROES - which is an acronym for Honorable Excellent Responsible Organized Energetic Students. Anyway, if students have turned in their homework all quarter there's a big field trip (pool, bowling alley, movie, etc.) I really want to add something that motivates my students in the mean time though. I'm definitely checking this out!

  11. I agree homework not getting done in the primary grades is usually more of a home issue than a kid issue. Love this cute idea to try to help motivate them. I always see a drop off in the spring when soccer starts, so maybe this will keep them going!

  12. Homework has always been a challenge in my room because the home support is just not there. I like your comment that students need to be responsible no matter which adversity they are facing. With this thought in mind, I am excited to begin a homework club! Thank you for the inspiration!

  14. This is an awesome idea. I think it will make all students want to complete their homework to be in the club! It is hard when homework is not a priority at home. However, this might motivate students to be more responsible for their own work. Great idea!

  16. I love this. You are right about it being a home issue when it isn't completed. Then when it happens time after time, the students think it is ok. Then you have the students that play sports and their excuse is that they didn't have time. This last year was my worst year with students completing homework. I don't do a homework club but I need to.

  17. Love your Homework Club idea and packet!! In 4th and 5th we struggle so with undone homework, also, and I agree that in a large part it is a family issue. Still, we are the ones who are left to deal with it. :) This year, we are going to try doing a Fun Friday activity for those who have no late work out...still working on just what the criteria will be to qualify, but we are thinking of having guests in to share their talents and hobbies, board game choice days, scrabble or chess tournaments, free choice day, movie day, cooking day, outdoors games or free time days, etc. We are hoping that it might be a motivator and serve as a catch-up time for those who need the time. What we have done in the past is Homeworkopoly, which is great, but so time consuming, and the last two years, we've done an economy system where they earn "dollars" and pay for priviledges or consequences, and then have a huge auction at the end of the year. That has worked pretty well and the auction is a lot of fun...as they say, "Money talks". :)

  18. This would be a wonderful resource to have in my classroom. i send home homework on Mondays with the instructions to bring it back completed on the following Monday. If I am lucky I might get 1/3 of my students work back. This pack displayed might encourage more of my students to return their homework. What a wonderful idea.

I get sick of keeping track of it, trying to instil responsibility into them to do it, and have appropriate consequences when they don't. It's so hard! I think incentive, like a homework club would be awesome! And you are right, kids love clubs! It would sure ease my daily homework headache!

  30. I started a homework hotspot last year so that it was easier for me to see who wasn't turning it in. They would fill out a paper with their name and date and stick it in their box if they had forgotten to complete their assignment. I try not to overwhelm my students with homework because I know at a young age it is beyond their control. The homework club sounds like a great way to reward students who turn it in and encourage those who don't always complete the assignment to work on it the next time. Love the packet!

  33. I love the idea of a homework club. I have been doing Homeworkopoly but the management of that can become cumbersome. I love that each month the kids have a chance (with a few passes) for a certificate, lunch and being posted on the Honmework Wall of Fame. You have organized it all so beautifully. When I first saw it this morning I immediately pinned it and put it on my wishlist. However- I really hope to win it. Thank you for the contest.

  36. I love this idea! I teach Kindergarten and many of the parents didn't take homework seriously last year. I think a homework club would help the students motivate their parents! I also love the idea of letting the children eat with you in the classroom. We share lunchroom duty and are free every third week so I could easily work this reward into my schedule. Thank you for sharing this great idea!

  37. This is a nice twist! I have usually had my students fill out an "oops" slip that must be taken home and signed. I have parents who don't care some who lose it if their child brings one home. I really don't make a big deal if it is an occasional slip. I love the idea off eating in the classroom as a reward. What a good way to motivate students to be responsible.

Hopefully this will motivate those kids who rarely do their homework. Thanks for sharing and I hope I win!

  46. ugh i hate homework! i wish i didn't have to deal with it at all, but it seems most parents insist on it. so i do it, but since deep down, i don't care, i've been terrible at tracking it. i've revamped my homework policy for september since i'm moving to second grade...a quick half sheet of language, half sheet of math, plus one page of spelling from the series we have and 20 minutes of reading (they will check out a leveled book). So, to go with this new improved plan, I'm looking for something just like this to keep track of it! So thank you for the inspiration AND the opportunity to win. I also LOVE your idea of just randomly picking a few people to give the charms to! Brilliant :)

  72. my 2nd grade team is starting homework this coming year, so this pack will be most helpful. I am curious, do you give all the homework on Monday for them to complete throughout the week, or is it given out every day? Also, for the kids who are missing assignments, when or how are they made up? are homework assignments ever checked as a whole class? Thanks so much for the chance to win!! abc_teacher@yahoo.com

    ReplyDelete
  73. I put the date/assignment on the board along with the student's name or number so they (I) can see what is missing. If it doesn't come back the next day, the student must take an extra from my extra box to do during recess or at home depending on the assignment. I will also email parents after a few days. I love the idea of a HW club though. I think that would give my kids a little extra motivation. Jenny, I tend to check most of my HW whole class. That way they can see what they did wrong and make corrections. My students also can ask questions about missed questions.

I let the group decide where they wanted the picture taken and if it was to be serious or funny! I post the picture in the room and at the end of the year we raffle off the pictures. You would think "it's the next best thing to sliced bread!" We also give each student a "mercy card" each 9 weeks and they can use it for a incomplete or missing homework assignment without consequence. That works well also. Homework is always an issue and anything we can do to help...

The best part of kids not turning in homework is the stories that go along with it.
I got the dog ate my homework story from a student this year. When I made a puzzling face at him he said "I thought teachers were supposed to believe that story!" And the stories of I was too busy I had baseball practice. Etc. etc.

  88. I love the idea of a homework club. I totally agree that many students do not complete homework due to lack of support at home. We are told at my campus that we must give homework, I try to limit it to basic practice that can be completed without help from an adult, spelling practice, math facts, nightly reading. I think the club would help to encourage students to complete their practice.

  89. I, like so many of you, think homework is important. My dilemma has been....assigning homework that doesn't require any (very little) parent help. I hear a lot from my parents that by the time they get off work, dinner started and served, etc. they don't have any energy or patients left to help their child with homework. I am very curious in hearing what you assign for 2nd or 3rd graders for homework. I need something fun and applicable/meaningful so the kids will really want to complete it. I love your packet and I love those tags you use. I really appreciate you sharing this post and I look forward to learning what you assign.

    Thanks so much!

  91. Homework is such hard thing for the little ones. I really struggled on how to handle it with my kids this year since many of them did not want to turn it in. Kids were supposed to read every night for 20 minutes and would either have a quick worksheet to review what we had learned or something as simple as practicing math facts for 10 minutes. At this age I am just trying to teach them responsibility for the older grades. I like the idea of a homework club, it may be a great incentive for the students who do not turn their work in.
