Here's my rug:
I love it. We sit on it. We learn on it... and it's definitely a huge part of my instruction.
This coming week it will become a REAL part of my instruction when we learn more about homophones. I made 20 homophone cards and will put one on each square...
I'll be lining the kiddos up in two teams and having them throw a Koosh ball. Whichever space it lands on, that student will have to use the word correctly in a sentence to earn a point. Then it will be the next team's turn.
My brain is swimming with how I could use this more often... laying out spelling words, vocabulary words, words for students to identify prefixes or suffixes, compound words... and the best part is that all it takes is the ball, the rug, and to whip up some quick word cards!
I hope my kiddos are as excited as I am about this one!
On a side note- you still have one more day to enter the giveaway to win a copy of Maria Dismondy's book The Potato Chip Champ! Click the pic to head over to that post and enter.

I love that idea. You could also have them be holding a verb or noun card in their hands so they have to work to put together a strategic sentence, or one that makes sense with the person who went before them. Hmmm...I can see my future for next week!

I really like this idea! I have a rug with squares as well (mine looks a little different). We call ours the "Magic Carpet" because that is where all the "magic" happens in our classroom! Cheesy, I know, but the kiddos really buy into it! Anytime the kiddos can get up and moving (not to mention throw things) they love it! Now off to make some cards!

I love the idea of calling it the "magic carpet". I just call ours the learning carpet, but I like magic carpet much better :)
DeleteLove that game idea!

I just received a carpet from Donors Choose and I can't wait to start using it in my instruction. What a great idea to make it a game board.

I want a rug like that :( My rug is extremely boring - I'll have to see if I can find something more cheerful to brighten up the classroom that we can play cool games on. How big are your classrooms? My rug is kind of squashed under the whiteboard - not exactly the best place for throwing a kooch ball :)

Such a great and easy game to do to help review a lot of skills. I'm always looking for something to get them up and moving because it helps so many of my kids! Love it and thanks!
ReplyDeleteAwesome idea! Now you'll have to tell us where you acquired your rug. I want one, too!
ReplyDeleteI have the same rug! I never thought to use it that way during instruction. Great idea!

I am loving this idea. I am going to have to try this in my classroom as well. I have a carpet that is similar, but has a circle in the middle of each box.

I'm lovin' this idea! I think I'll use it with compound words this week. :)
ReplyDeleteI am going to eat some potato chips and hope I am the one who takes this book home :) The things I do for a book!
