I love it. We sit on it. We learn on it... and it's definitely a huge part of my instruction.
This coming week it will become a REAL part of my instruction when we learn more about homophones. I made 20 homophone cards and will put one on each square...
I'll be lining the kiddos up in two teams and having them throw a Koosh ball. Whichever space it lands on, that student will have to use the word correctly in a sentence to earn a point. Then it will be the next team's turn.
My brain is swimming with how I could use this more often... laying out spelling words, vocabulary words, words for students to identify prefixes or suffixes, compound words... and the best part is that all it takes is the ball, the rug, and to whip up some quick word cards!
I hope my kiddos are as excited as I am about this one!

I love that idea. You could also have them be holding a verb or noun card in their hands so they have to work to put together a strategic sentence, or one that makes sense with the person who went before them. Hmmm...I can see my future for next week!

I really like this idea! I have a rug with squares as well (mine looks a little different). We call ours the "Magic Carpet" because that is where all the "magic" happens in our classroom! Cheesy, I know, but the kiddos really buy into it! Anytime the kiddos can get up and moving (not to mention throw things) they love it! Now off to make some cards!

I want a rug like that :( My rug is extremely boring - I'll have to see if I can find something more cheerful to brighten up the classroom that we can play cool games on. How big are your classrooms? My rug is kind of squashed under the whiteboard - not exactly the best place for throwing a kooch ball :)

I am loving this idea. I am going to have to try this in my classroom as well. I have a carpet that is similar, but has a circle in the middle of each box.
